The Best Baby List
Getting ready for baby! The baby items that are essential and the items that are not necessary but will make your life easier.
I have created a baby list that has the most essential items along with items that are for your convenience. You can print out the checklist and check off the items as you get them. Create a baby registry so your loved one’s can help you fulfill these items. I used Amazon for my baby registry because I thought it would be easiest for everyone to purchase items since, most people have Amazon prime. With Amazon prime your friends can choose to send the gift straight to your house. When I was pregnant with my third baby, it had been 12 years since I had a baby. Baby items changed so much and there’s so much more to choose from now. I was unsure of what would be the best items for my little girl. I want to share with you, through my experience, what is helpful or necessary. I have a 18 year old daughter, 15 year old daughter, 3-year-old daughter and an 18-month-old son. I breastfed all of my babies. I will let you know what helped me along with breastfeeding. Some items are essential and some are for convenience. This is the best baby list you will find.
I will highlight the essentials in blue.
You can check with your insurance if you get a free electric breast pump. I was surprised, my insurance gave me a free breast pump. It’s such a luxury. My insurance sent me the Medela breast pump and it worked great. You can call your insurance company and they will tell you what brands they carry and then you can look up the reviews online before making a decision. If you get an electric breast pump you can also get a hand pump for extra convenience, but it’s not essential. A hand pump is convenient to have when you are engorged and need a quick release. It’s also easy to travel with. The electric breast pump is good for creating a larger supply for when you go back to work, or if your exclusively pumping , or if your pumping frequently to increase your milk supply.
I personally, used the Medela pump and it worked great for me.

You will need nursing pads to prevent milk leakage in public. Carry some in your diaper bag and purse to prevent any embarrassing moments. It probably will happen to you at some point. Don’t worry about it. I like to have both, disposable and nondisposable nursing pads.

It’s good to have some nipple cream around. In the beginning, your nipples will probably get dry like chapped lips. You can apply the cream on your nipples to moisten and relieve some pain. Take care of your breasts proactively so you don’t end up with a painful infection.
Apply the cream in between feedings, wipe it off before you nurse again. Try not to wear a shirt, in the beginning, to let your breast air out and heal. They will leak a lot and you don’t want them to sit in a damp shirt.
Water is so important in your breastfeeding journey. You won’t be able to produce enough milk without drinking enough water. Breastfeeding makes you feel hungry and thirsty all the time. You’re going to have your hands full, you’re going to be forgetful, and your not going to have time for yourself. So try and have water and food ready and available at all times. I like the water bottles with the time markers to help remind you when you need more water. I also think a bottle with a straw may make it a little easier for you to drink while holding the baby.
The bras I like to use are the sleep nursing bras. I don’t like the type that you have to unhook or unbotton. It’s hard enough getting the baby adjusted, he’s wiggling around, and your trying to keep yourself covered in public, and you have to worry about a difficult snap or button. With the sleep bra, you can just pop the boob out. You’ll find out, each baby has their different breastfeeding likes and dislikes. My youngest was at a point for a while that he would only nurse with me side-lying, nursing him. That’s the only way he could get comfortable for a while. Make sure you think about the comfort and accessibility to nurse when dressing yourself.
Nursing shirts are helpful. You want to make your wardrobe as convenient to nurse as possible. I think the nursing shirts help with easy access and at the same time helping with coverage. I mostly used low cut shirts that we’re easy to pull down to nurse. This saved me money on buying a bunch of nursing shirts.
Subscribe and save through Amazon. The Amazon brand of gummy vitamins tastes delicious and are very affordable. Or try the vegan option by Mykind.
Your going to be burning calories producing milk. This is going to leave you hungry all the time. Make sure you have snacks readily available. Have fruit, granola bars, protein bars, fiber one snacks, belvita biscuits, and lactation snacks. The lactation snacks will help you produce more milk while replenishing your calories. You can also drink tea to help with lactation. I enjoyed drinking tea everyday and this counts towards your hydration. I drank the heart mama milk aid tea. Have some healthy snacks lying around so you don’t eat fast junk foods like chips and cookies.

The breastfeeding cover was convenient sometimes. I think it depends on your baby’s personality. My daughter did pretty well with it. I used it frequently with her. My son didn’t like to be covered so I would have to hold a blanket up to cover myself but not touch the baby with the blanket. I kept the nursing scarf on all the time because it helped with coverage.
This was very helpful the first two weeks. After, having a c-section, I needed the extra help with supporting my baby. But I only used it for a couple of weeks. After that, it was more work to use the pillow than to just hold my baby on my own. It was more difficult to try and get the baby in the right position with the nursing pillow. A regular pillow came in more handy if I did need the support.
Clothes are fun to buy. You’ll probably receive a lot of clothes from your baby shower because people love to buy cute baby clothes. Baby’s grow so fast. You may have a small baby that stays petite, or you may have a big baby that grows out of clothes in a week. My kids grow super fast. My kids wore newborn clothes for a week. Then they wore size 0-3 months for a couple of weeks and wore 3-6 months for a couple of months. It’s better to have sizes at least up to 6 months. So your prepared if your baby grows through clothes real fast. Make sure when you do your baby registry that you add sizes 0-6 months when picking out clothes.
Lower amount is essential and the larger amount is for convenience. You will probably change your baby’s clothes multiple times a day because your milk will leak on their clothes, the baby will spit up, and blow outs of poop. So you will be doing a lot of laundry.
7-14 pairs of Socks
5 baby gloves (you could use socks on the baby’s hands if you don’t want to buy gloves)
Baby laundry detergent
I used the swaddle blankets a lot. They’re easy to use and helps put the baby to sleep. My son cried a lot and this would help calm him down. You’ll want a night light if your breastfeeding. The baby will wake up often but you won’t want to turn the bright lights on. The white noise machines help with putting your baby to sleep. It helped me sometimes and sometimes not. But it’s worth having. You’ll want any help you can get.

EBY sells everyday seamless underwear on subscription. Co-founded by Sofia Vergara, EBY features more than 6 styles across sizes XS to 4X and donates 10% of proceeds to fund microfinance loans for female entrepreneurs around the world.
When buying a stroller, I recommend a stroller with bigger wheals. The cheaper the stroller, the harder it will be to push and maneuver. You’ll realize how difficult it is to walk your stroller on anything but a smoothe terrain. The companies makes the more expensive strollers more convenient to fold up and open up. You won’t have to buy a sun shade for your stroller if you buy a stroller that already has good sunshade coverage. You’ll notice the convenience of the sun and rain cover when your out for a walk and then it starts to rain on you or the sun starts to get stronger a d your baby is crying and your worried about a sun burn because baby’s skin is very sensitive to the sun.

My kids were super picky with bottles. They liked the Dr. Brown’s bottles the most. These bottles are also recommended by pediatricians and help with gas and colic. The amount of bottles needed depend on how often you plan to bottle feed.
4-8 Bottles and Nipples
High chair (this isn’t essential yet but if you add it to your baby registry then someone might buy it for you so you don’t have to worry about it later.)
5-Bibs (I could never get my kids to use bibs, I just washed a lot of laundry, but if you can get your baby to wear a bib, feeding will definitely be easier)
5-Burp cloths (I never used these but you make like to use them)
These were my babies favorite brands for pacifiers.
2- Teething toys
Formula (if needed)
Thermometer (oral/rectal) not ear or forehead. When your baby is a newborn the doctor will want a rectal reading for the most accurate reading. You’ll need Vaseline to insert the thermometer. You can clean the thermometer with alcohol.
My babies had sensitive skin so I could only use a few brands of diapers their first year. The huggies snugglers , hello bello, and the honest company. If your baby gets a rash it may be the diaper. I would get 1 box of newborn diapers and 1 box of size 1. Unless, you know your baby will be on the smaller size or born early. Then you want to get a box of premie diapers and newborn diapers. If you subscribe from the hello bello website you can save money by bundling. Or you can subscribe from Amazon and save 5-20% off your purchase. You can include the diapers, baby wipes, baby laundry detergent, baby soap, baby lotion, and vitamin drops.
My favorite brand of wipes is Pampers, second favorite is Huggies, but I would also use the hello bello brand that comes in the diaper package. I liked them because they were made of mostly water, but they were a little thin and dry so I had to use more wipes during diaper changes. The Amazon brand works good enough but again I think they are a little thin and dry. You may try and save money by buying cheaper brands or off brands, then the product will probably not work as well and you will have to use more of the product, ending in spending the same amount of money. The diapers may leak faster (more leaks that end up soiling clothes and sheets)and you have to use more baby wipes to clean up the same job
You’ll definitely want to invest in a diaper pale to keep the stinky diaper air contained.
The changing pad is convenient because no matter where you are you have a clean place to change your baby’s diaper and your back might be hurting so if you don’t have to bend down to change diapers every five minutes, you’ll be slightly happier.
Along with a diaper bag, a diaper organizer is convenient to have. For a whole I only used the diaper caddy because I was able to see where the items were instead of fishing through a bag. I would bring it in the car or have it with in whatever room I was hanging out in.

A diaper station is not essential but is convenient if you have the space for it. Your going to be doing a lot of bending and lifting
My favorite baby soap brand is Baby Dove. It’s delicate on their skin and doesn’t over dry. My second favorite brand is Eucerin and Eucerin has a good eczema line. Don’t skip out on the lotion. Moisturizing your baby’s skin is important.
I decided that quality is better than a quantity when it comes to towels. You can three towels for the price of one towel but the cheaper towels have a very thin material whereas the more expensive brands are thick, soft, and fluffy.
A baby scale is definitely not essential. It will make you feel better knowing if your baby is gaining weight normally. It also could save you trips to the pediatric office if you can relay the baby’s weight over the phone instead of going in the clinic for a weight check.
I bought a few different carriers. The Infantino works great and is very affordable. If you want to spend the extra money to get the best quality then I recommend the Lillebaby brand. If you want to know the difference, it’s small minor things, like getting better the back support or the comfort of the cushion for the baby’s head.
Your pediatrician will tell you to start doing tummy time. You can do this by putting a blanket down on the floor and leaving the baby on his or her tummy. But if you want the whole bells and whistles to keep your baby amused longer then, buy a baby gym. I did try out the water mat and I did not like it. I never used it because I didn’t feel like it was safe.

Most babies cry a lot and you need to rock them to soothe them to sleep. If you want a break from rocking and holding your crying baby then you can try a swing or rocker.
I chose the baby monitor with two cameras because I have an upstairs and downstairs. I chose the one that came with a monitor not the o e that connects your smart phone because I figured I may want to be on my phone and I won’t be able to see the baby. I like to have the monitor available for me to stare at the whole time.
Make sure you have your emergency numbers and information on the fridge. Its hard to think clearly under emergencies. So make sure you are ready. Not to mention, taking a CPR class is very useful.
So, these are the baby items that I think are essential or convenient for a new mom. You can print out this baby list and check off as you get them. Don’t buy too much, until after the baby shower. You don’t want to get a bunch of duplicates. I wouldn’t spend too much money on newborn clothes because your baby will probably only wear that size for a short time. Have a variety of sizes of clothes so your prepared for your baby’s fast growth. keep in mind that if you plan to have more children you can save money by picking colors that are gender neutral for baby gear, clothes and blankets. I never thought of the future and had a plan of when or if I would have more kids. When I was pregnant with my third baby, I was so excited to get everything pink and girly. Then I became pregnant with a boy 8 months after she was born. So reusing baby items would be very convenient. I hope all of this helps inform your decisions. I spent a lot of time and live in making this baby list. Congratulations! Your going to be a great mom. I hope for all the best.
